The Board of Trustees

Our Trustees come from a broad range of backgrounds with diverse skills and experience to support the charity. They all give their time, energy and expertise for free.

Their key responsibilities are to:

  • Lead the charity, establish its mission, vision and values and ensure it has a clear purpose and an overall framework of policies and standards.
  • Develop overall strategies to achieve the charity’s aims and to ensure there is a clear system to delegate implementation of the strategies to the Chief Executive and employee team.
  • Monitor performance of the charity against standards that ensures effective, efficient and economic use of the charity’s resources and assets.
  • Ensure compliance with the law and accountability to the charity’s stakeholders and provide transparency in performance of their actions.
  • Ensure the Board of Trustees itself performs effectively, contains people with the skills and experience it needs, and makes plans to ensure the recruitment, induction ad development of new trustees.

Kate Tompkins

  • Trained as a nurse at Kings College London.
    Specialised in community work for long term conditions and end of life care.
  • Director of Nursing and Director of Operations for NHS Trust
  • Chief Executive for NHS Trust and a Primary Care Trust.
  • SW Regional Director for the Royal College of Nursing.
  • Chief Executive for a Nursing charity.
  • Married with 3 daughters and 4 granddaughters.
  • Personal link to osteoporosis through grandmother.

Vice Chair: Mrs Carole Walker

Carole Walker

  • Retired NHS HR & Executive Director and Independent Management Consultant.
  • Previously a Lay Member of the Employment Tribunal Service and Volunteer Counsellor with Leeds Metropolitan University.
  • I designed, and with my husband, built our own house.
  • We have five grandchildren with an age range of four to 23.
  • Travelling around the world, a bit restricted now bearing in mind my osteoporosis.
  • Avid reader and a member of a local book club.
  • Enjoys the theatre and opera.

Professor Juliet Compston

Juliet Compston

  • Current position: Emeritus Professor of Bone Medicine at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine.
  • Other current appointments: Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, the top journal in bone research. Chair of the European Union Osteoporosis Consultation Panel and of the UK National Osteoporosis Guidelines Group (NOGG).
  • Married with one daughter. Hobbies include dog walking and horse riding.
  • Research interests: guidelines for management of osteoporosis, secondary causes of osteoporosis, effects of obesity on bone health. Over 400 original research papers published.
  • Awards: National Osteoporosis Society Kohn Foundation Award (2006), International Bone and Mineral Society John G Haddad Jr Award (2009), American Society of Bone and Mineral Research Frederic C Bartter Award (2009), Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to the treatment of osteoporosis (2014).

Dr Louise Dolan

Louise Dolan

  • Consultant Rheumatologist of Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Lewisham and Greenwich Trust.
  • Runs clinics in osteoporosis and the local bone density service as well as supporting a fracture liaison service.
  • Currently Divisional Director in Long Term Conditions for Lewisham and Greenwich Trust, taking an active role in hospital management

Professor Neil Gittoes

Neil Gittoes

  • Graduated from University of Birmingham with honours in medicine (MBChB(Hons)) and anatomical studies (BSc)Hons))
  • PhD in molecular endocrinology with early career support from a 6 year Medical Research Council (UK) Career Establishment Grant.
  • Awarded the Goulstonian Lectureship at the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), London in recognition of clinical and academic achievement at time of conferment of Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians.
  • Head, Centre for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Birmingham Health Partners.
  • Member of Council of the Society for Endocrinology, Vice-chairman of Specialised Endocrinology Clinical Reference Group, NHS England and West Midlands Clinical Senate member.
  • Consultant Endocrinologist and Metabolic Bone Physician at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, and Birmingham Children's Hospital.
  • Associate Medical Director for Clinical Partnerships at University Hospitals Birmingham with responsibility for external engagement with other health care providers and clinical commissioning groups.
  • A dedicated family man with two children at senior school and hence I am adept at taxiing and ferrying! Two dogs, chickens, a rabbit and a budgie make for a lively household although my wife, Paula, keeps us all in check.
  • I enjoy running, cycling and swimming and the whole family look forward to skiing in the winter. As a family we also enjoy quiet times on the beach and the coastal paths of Pembrokeshire. My son and I are keen Worcester Warriors supporters and manage to make most of the home matches through the rugby season.

Treasurer: Mrs Frances Grigg

Frances Grigg

  • Accountant with over 25 years experience of small and large organisations both in private and voluntary sector.
  • Currently working as the Finance Director / Deputy Chief Executive of Heritage Care a Registered Charity and provider of social care.
  • Has lived and worked in Australia and in the Netherlands.
  • Is a leader in Girl guiding and in addition to running a unit of Guides each week, has travelled to New Zealand, Switzerland and India with the movement.
  • Lives in Essex with her husband.
  • Enjoys swimming, walking, reading and is always trying to improve her watercolour painting skills.

Dr Lynne Wigens

Lynne Wigens
  • Regional Chief Nurse for NHS England, Midlands and East.
  • Former Director of Nursing and Quality at The Ipswich Hospital NHS Trust and Director of Patient Safety and Clinical Quality at NHS Suffolk.
  • A Florence Nightingale Scholar, studying leadership and the nursing contribution to integrated care in Canterbury, New Zealand and is using this knowledge to inform her New Care Models Workforce facilitation.
  • Published in a range of areas including; integrated care, workforce development, talent management and clinical supervision.
  • Really enjoys leading the nursing, midwifery and allied health professional working and improving the quality of care.
  • Her career has included clinical, educational and professional management roles. A key motivator throughout her career has been the desire to ensure that clinical practitioners are supported effectively allowing them to strive to deliver excellence in patient care.
  • Passionate about improving the commissioning and provision of care to meeting the needs of people with osteoporosis within her Trustee role.

Caroline Trewhitt

Caroline Trewhitt

  • Financial services executive with over 20 years experience leading strategic change and corporate development projects in both large and small organisations
  • Extensive international experience and has lived and worked in Switzerland and the Netherlands.
  • Serves as Lay Member Governance and Audit Committee for Bromley NHS Clinical Commissioning Group.
  • Lives in Kent.
  • In her spare time is a keen scuba diver and, when not underwater, also enjoys walking and trips to the theatre and ballet.
